Counterpoint E-zine
We report on what’s going on inside CEATL, and we look outside as well. We present feature articles about translators and translating and deal with the broad cultural, artistic and economic context of our work. We intend Counterpoint to live up to its name and be a place where independent and sometimes contrasting voices come together and form a stronger and more enthralling whole, much like the art of literary translation itself.
Counterpoint is free of charge and published twice a year in English and French.

Translation Grant
Dear translators,
We wish you a very happy and creative 2014, and would like to thank you for the greetings that have reached us from all over the world!
In the fall of 2012, its fiftieth anniversary year, the Max Geilinger Foundation Prize was awarded to the Translation House Looren. The Foundation was established in memory of the Zurich poet, dramatist, and translator Max Geilinger (1884-1948), and honors individuals or institutions for outstanding contributions to the cultural exchange between Switzerland and the English-speaking world.
The Translation House Looren Association is using the prize money to fund the Max Geilinger Translation Grants from 2013 to 2015. Applications are open to translators who are translating a work of Swiss literature into English or translating an English-language work into German, French, Italian, or Rhaeto-Romanic.
Ten grants will be awarded. Each is worth CHF 2,000 and is tied to a one-month residency at Translation House Looren. Grant recipients are responsible for their own travel costs.
Application Deadlines are February 28, June 30, and October 31, respectively. To find out more, see the attached file or visit: http://www.looren.net/53-2-Max-Geilinger-Grants.html
The entire Looren team looks forward to meeting new guests and welcoming back familiar faces over the following months.

How Will Microsoft Windows XP End-Of-Life Impact Your Daily Work as a Translator?
As you probably have heard, starting next April, Microsoft will stop providing new security updates, non-security hotfixes or any kind of support for Windows XP.
Already many software vendors have dropped support for Microsoft Windows XP. It is also likely that providers of antivirus software will not continue supporting Microsoft Windows XP, which will open the door for exploits specific to Windows XP. Staying on Microsoft Windows XP will become risky.
Although Microsoft Windows XP is currently the OS for only a small minority of memoQ users (around 6%), supporting this platform is costly for Kilgray – Microsoft no longer releases the newest .NET Framework (4.5) for Windows XP. Using the latest .NET Framework offers us better and more efficient ways to develop software, and to deliver to you more functionality and stability in memoQ.
As a result, we are considering dropping support for Microsoft Windows XP as well, sometime in 2014.
We don’t want to leave you stranded, so we would like to know what your plans are regarding upgrading from Windows XP. Read More...

Translation slam
On Monday 12 March at 2 pm I’ll be taking part in a translation slam with Frank Wynne as part of the Norwich Writers Centre Showcase event and it’s being streamed live:
http://www.writerscentrenorwich.org.uk/livestreamingeventnorwichshowcasetr anslationslam.aspx
A slam is when 2 translators are asked to translate the same text (in advance).
Each one does the translation and then sends it to the moderator. Neither sees the work of the other. On the day, the translators read out their respective translations, which are inevitably totally different (and it's really incredible how much so). The audience is of course baffled, especially if they've never thought about translation before. Moderator asks pertinent questions and translators explain their choices. It's a brilliant way of showcasing the art of translation and getting audiences to understand about voice etc. but incredibly scary to be the translator whose work gets dissected!
All the best
Ros

Kilgray Translation Technologies Opens US Office
25 February 2010
Kilgray Translation Technologies, developers of memoQ products and TM Repository, has opened its first USA office in Austin, Texas. Headed up by long-time industry professional, Patricia Bown, as Director of Sales, Americas, Kilgray will be adding project-, vendor-, and implementation management expertise to its business development team.
The USA is an important market for Kilgray's products and the next logical progression after having solidified its user base in Europe. The USA office will help support an expected enthusiastic response in the market to its major new release of memoQ version 4.0 for the server and desktop.
Kilgray products are used by freelance translators, language service providers on any scale, as well as medium-sized export-oriented companies and multinational enterprises. “In today's competitive market, both control and flexibility need to be available at every stop in the 'food chain' for globalized and localized content,” says István Lengyel, COO of Kilgray Translation Technologies. “We expect the new release [memoQ 4.0] to appeal to the distinctly North American independent streak, creating a breakthrough in this market for Kilgray. With the opening of this office, we are devoting resources to be able to work more directly with the US and other American markets.”
About Kilgray Kilgray Translation Technologies, a company headquartered in Budapest, Hungary, delivers computer-assisted technologies for the translation industry. The company was established in 2004 and launched the first version of memoQ, a translation memory tool, in 2006. All products of Kilgray - memoQ, memoQ Server and TM Repository - facilitate, accelerate and optimize the entire translation process. The networked translation suites of Kilgray are team-oriented and designed for the use of small translation teams as well as large enterprises.
